Some anglers like kayaks that come equipped with every conceivable bell and whistle imaginable, including the storage compartments designed for tackle boxes, cutting-edge propulsion systems and seats that require an engineering degree to operate. Conversely, other anglers simply want a kayak that will allow them to paddle around their favorite fishing holes and catch fish.
They want storage compartments and comfortable seats, but they don’t want to spend thousands of dollars for them. Such anglers may want to consider the Pelican Strike 100X Angler. Built to perform the way anglers need it to and provide the types of basic features most anglers want, the Strike 100X Angler is a high-quality vessel that will suit many anglers well.
- Adequate storage space for most anglers
- Adjustable leg rests ensure a comfortable ride
- Very lightweight for its size and quality
- Made from a high-quality polyethylene blend that provides great stiffness and strength
- Potentially stable enough to permit standing
- Only one cargo area is provided
- Some anglers complained that water collected in the cockpit
- The seats don’t provide high levels of support
- Rear storage hatch may be difficult to reach
- Not especially fast
The Strike 100X Angler is made from RAM-X™ PREMIUM – a multilayer polyethylene that contains advanced resins for additional rigidity. In fact, the Strike 100X Angler’s hull is stronger, lighter and stiffer than most other kayaks at the same price point.
A built-in keel is provided to impart even more rigidity on the craft and to help improve its performance on the water. A drain plug is also included to help you empty any water that accumulates.
The Strike 100X Angler features three primary storage areas. This includes two circular hatches – one located at the bow, the other located behind the seat – for storing tools and tackle and a flat cargo area at the stern for storing coolers, live wells and similar items.
The cargo area includes bungee straps to ensure your gear stays secure in rough waters. Two flush-mount rod holders are positioned behind the seat, and a single swivel-style rod holder is situated in the cockpit, directly in front of the seat. Six accessory eyelets are also included so that you can clip other items to the boat.
The Strike 100X Angler provides a relatively comfortable ride for anglers. The seat isn’t especially comfortable, but it is adjustable so that you can achieve the best riding position for your body.
However, the Strike 100X Angler provides a relatively roomy cockpit and also features adjustable footrests. Some riders complained that water entered the cockpit fairly consistently, but others were able to stay dry while paddling around. Disappointingly, the Strike 100X Angler does not include thigh or knee pads.
Most anglers found the Strike 100X Angler to be surprisingly stable for a craft that only has a 30.5-inch beam. Some anglers will find that it is stable enough for standing and that the cockpit provides plenty of foot room for doing so.
You’ll be able to paddle around calm or moderately choppy waters without fear of tipping, but it isn’t designed for use in strong river currents. It only has a 325-pound capacity, so large anglers may have to limit the amount of gear they bring along.
The Strike 100X Angler performs very well on the water for a kayak at this price point. Its multi-chine hull design helps it to track very well, and most anglers reported that it is easy to paddle around. It isn’t the fastest kayak on the water, but this is to be expected from a kayak this size.
Handles at the bow, stern and on both sides of the cockpit make it easy to transport this kayak, and because it only weighs 50 pounds, many anglers will be able to do so without help.
Anglers seeking a high-quality craft that is stable, durable and a joy to paddle will likely find the Pelican Strike 100X Angler a very attractive option. It provides ample, if not abundant, storage space and the combination of the adjustable seat and footrests make it easy to stay comfortable – even on lengthy trips.
It is lightweight, easy to transport and quite nimble, so it is ideal for anglers who want a highly maneuverable vessel. You won’t win many races with the Strike 100X Angler, but it will certainly prove fast enough for most angler’s needs.
