You usually get what you pay for when buying a fishing kayak. Bargain-basement priced models rarely provide the performance, storage capacity or comfort that most anglers want, while top-notch, premium models generally carry premium price tags.
However, there are a few models that provide high-end performance at relatively moderate price points – like, for example, the Pelican Catch 120 NXT. Made from premium materials, packed with helpful design features and easy to pilot, the Catch 120 NXT deserves very serious consideration by any angler that wants a kayak whose value exceeds its cost.
- The Catch 120 NXT is made from premium materials
- Very stable kayak that makes standing up easy
- Two-position seat allows you to ride high when visibility is important or drop down for easier paddling
- Some anglers complained that water collected in the cockpit
- It is probably a bit too heavy for many anglers to carry by themselves
- It doesn’t include any “extras,” such as thigh pads or a skid plate
The Catch 120 NXT is an exceptionally well-built kayak – especially for one at such a reasonable price point. Like many other Pelican kayaks, the Catch 120 NXT is built from RAM-X™ PREMIUM – a multi-layer polyethylene blended with advanced resins.
This helps provide additional rigidity and strength, while still keeping the hull’s weight low. The kayak’s tunnel hull design helps improve the craft’s performance and stability, and the included drain holes make it easy to dump water that collects in the cockpit.
The Catch 120 NXT provides plenty of storage space for your tackles, tools, snacks and equipment. A large, oval-shaped quick-lock hatch is located at the bow, and a smaller, round hatch is located at the bow. Directly behind the seat, a large cargo area is provided for carrying live wells, coolers, backpacks and similar items.
Three flush-mounted rod holders are built-in to the Catch 120 NXT, and 4 rigging rails are included so that you can add additional accessory mounts. Two paddle holders and two rod tie downs are also included, and a bottle holder is located directly in front of the seat.
Overall, most anglers found that the Catch 120 NXT provided a very comfortable ride. The cockpit is very roomy and provides a generous amount of leg room (although no leg or thigh pads are included, which is disappointing).
The Pelican Catch 120 NXT comes equipped with the ERGOCAST G2 dual position seating system. The seatback can be adjusted like those of most similarly priced vessels, but the entire seat can be raised to provide improved visibility or lowered to deck level for paddling comfort.
The Catch 120 NXT is a rock-solid kayak with a 34-inch beam that will take on relatively rough waters with ease. You’ll never feel like you’re going to tip over when taking on moderate swells or battling big fish. Most anglers will find it possible to stand up and fish on the Catch 120 NXT.
In fact, the Catch 120 NXT provides plenty of room for your feet and a standing assist strap to make standing quite easy. It also boasts a 400-pound capacity, so even large anglers will likely be able to bring all the tackle they want.
Despite measuring nearly 12 feet in length and 34 inches in width, the Catch 120 NXT is still a relatively nimble vessel. It tracks and turns well, and it is easy to navigate through cluttered waters. Equipped with four carrying handles (one located on each side of the cockpit, one at the bow and one at the stern), the Catch 120 NXT is pretty easy to haul from your vehicle to the water and back.
At only 69 pounds, some anglers will find it possible to carry the kayak by themselves, although most riders will appreciate a bit of help from a friend while doing so.
The Pelican Catch 120 NXT is a bit of a needle-in-a-haystack given its combination of impressive quality and (relatively) affordable price tag. It is priced like an entry- or intermediate-level kayak, yet it performs as well enough to satisfy the demands of experienced kayakers.
It is equipped with plenty of storage space, provides a very stable ride and is buoyant enough to support 400 pounds. Additionally, it tracks well and is easy to paddle and control; simply put, this kayak has very few weaknesses when compared to other models at this price point. This kayak deserves serious consideration for all anglers shopping at this price point.
