To be a serious angler, you need a serious kayak. You need one that not only provides all of the features you need but the performance characteristics any serious paddler requires. But this doesn’t mean you have to spend several thousand dollars to attain such a craft.
In fact, the Ocean Kayak Trident 15 Angler satisfies all of these needs and more, while still hovering around the $1500 price point. The Trident 15 Angler is a well-built, high-performance craft, designed to specifically meet the needs of modern anglers.
- A very fast vessel that tracks well over long distances
- Provides plenty of storage room to bring almost all of the gear you’d like
- Includes a comfortable cockpit that’s easy to adjust to suit your body
- A slightly heavy kayak that may be difficult to carry without help
- Relatively narrow cockpit may not provide enough elbow room for large anglers
- A bit unwieldy in congested areas
Like most other Ocean Kayak products, the Trident 15 Angler is well-built and sure to last. It is not only well-designed, the craftsmanship that went into the vessel is immediately obvious. The kayak measures 15 ½ feet long and 28 ½ inches wide and is available in four different colors to suit your tastes and preferences.
Reflective deck rigging is provided to help make the kayak as visible as possible to other boaters or paddlers, and it features a built-in skid plate to help protect the bottom from scratches and dings.
The Trident 15 Angler provides plenty of space for all of your gear, tackle, tools and equipment. Click seal hatches are located at the bow and stern, and an oversized cargo deck is positioned behind the seat. The cargo deck is equipped with bungee cords to keep your live well or cooler secure if the waters get rough.
But the most noteworthy storage space provided by the Trident 15 Angler is the Ocean Kayak’s Mod Pod II console, which provides a number of small storage areas and a small magnetic tray to keep your tackle from getting lost.
The Trident 15 Angler features a number of design concepts and premium components to help ensure you remain comfortable while fishing. The ACS2 Seat is padded and adjustable so that it will keep you comfortable all day long, and the adjustable footrests ensure that you can achieve an appropriate paddling position. The Trident 15 Angler isn’t especially wide, but its sit-on-top design makes it easy to hop in or out of the cockpit.
The Trident 15 Angler is a relatively narrow craft, but it is still quite stable. Most anglers will find it easy to remain upright, whether you are paddling or battling big fish. However, it is probably not quite stable enough for most anglers to feel comfortable standing.
It has an impressive 455-pound capacity, so even large anglers should be able to bring all the equipment they like on board, or even drag giant fish up onto the deck.
The Trident 15 Angler is a pretty fast kayak, which will let you cross long stretches of open water with ease. In fact, because it is more than 15 feet long and needs a bit of space to turn, it is more suitable for large waters than tiny farm ponds or narrow creeks. It tracks really well too (especially if purchased with the optional rudder system), so you don’t have to worry about being blown off course.
The Trident 15 Angler may be a bit heavy to carry by yourself, but its carrying handles (located at the bow, stern and cockpit) will make it easy to carry with a friend.
As you can see, the Ocean Kayak Trident 15 Angler is a very impressive kayak, especially when you take its reasonable price point into consideration. It provides almost everything you could want except for a rudder or propulsion system, but that’s to be expected for such an affordable kayak.
It has a well-built hull, provides a very comfortable ride (with plenty of ways to adjust your sitting and leg positions) and comes equipped with several storage compartments and decks. It cuts across the surface quickly, tracks well and provides plenty of stability for battling fish. It isn’t especially lightweight, so you’ll likely have to get some help launching or landing the boat, but this is a small price to pay for such an otherwise-excellent vessel.
