Part of the reason kayaks have become so popular among anglers in recent years is the fact that they are remarkably portable. Whereas you’ll likely need a trailer and a launch ramp for even the smallest boats, you can toss most small kayaks on the top of your car (or in the back of your truck), and launch it from just about anywhere.
Additionally, because many anglers like to fish in small, urban and suburban ponds where boats are not allowed, a kayak gives you the chance to access these waters pretty easily. The Ocean Kayak Tetra 10 Angler is a great option for anglers in these types of situations, as it is small and lightweight, yet still equipped with a number of angler-friendly features. Our in depth Ocean Kayak Tetra 10 Angler review focuses on build quality, storage capacity, comfort, balance, and more.
Pros
- Small and lightweight, making it a breeze to launch at the local park pond
- Equipped with a lot of storage space for such a small craft
- The Support Track Foot Brace System makes the kayak very comfortable for small- to medium-sized anglers
- Great value for the money
Cons
- Some anglers would prefer a more stable craft
- Not built to accommodate tall or large anglers
- No skid plate is included, so care must be exercised to avoid damage
- Not suitable for use in large waters or rough seas
Build Quality
The Tetra 10 is a polyethylene kayak that is designed for small anglers who like to fish in small waters. But despite its small size, it is still a very robustly built kayak. Most anglers found it durable enough for regular use, although it does not come with a skid plate, as many other Ocean Kayak models do.
Measuring 10-feet-and-8-inches-long and 29.5-inches-wide, the Tetra 10 only weighs about 50 pounds. However, it still boasts a 275 capacity, which is more than sufficient for most anglers. The Ocean Kayak Tetra 10 Angler comes with four handles (one at the stern, one at the bow and one on each side), to make it easier to carry.
Storage Capacity
Despite being a rather small kayak, the Tetra 10 Angler will carry a relatively large amount of equipment. A large cargo area is located in the stern and comes equipped with elastic bands to keep your cooler or live well secure. A watertight compartment is located at the bow, and it features a Click Seal Hatch, which makes it easy to access your gear.
It comes with two flush-mounted rod holders, and the Mod Pod II modular fishing gear system, which provides a place to mount your fish finder or GPS. The Mod Pod II also provides sliding tackle drawers, a cup holder and a magnet for keeping hooks and other items secure. A paddle keeper is also included so that you can keep your hands free for fishing.
Comfort
Most anglers with a small or medium build will likely find the Tetra 10 adequately comfortable, although tall anglers and those with a large build would be better served by selecting a different kayak. The Comfort Hybrid Seat is easy to adjust and provides reasonably good back support.
The Support Track Foot Brace System is easy to adjust and allows you to rest your legs in any of several different positions. Additionally, the included position indicators help to take the guesswork out of these adjustments and ensure that your feet are both at the same distance from your body.
Stability
The Tetra 10 will never be confused with a high-end kayak that is suitable for giant swells and offshore use, but it is likely stable enough to allow most anglers to fish confidently in calm waters. Nevertheless, a few anglers did report that the Tetra 10 performed reasonably well in choppy water and handled small swells with ease.
There is probably enough room to allow anglers a comfortable place to stand, but it is unlikely that many would feel that the kayak was stable enough for upright fishing. It is, however, an easy kayak to enter or exit.
Maneuverability
The Tetra 10 is relatively maneuverable, although it doesn’t track or handle quite as well as many other kayaks in the same price range. You won’t have problems turning the craft into a relatively tight area, but you may find that it doesn’t track very well across vast expanses of water.
This is to be expected though, as the Tetra 10 is primarily designed for small water use. However, an aftermarket rudder may help improve its handling, tracking and maneuverability, if you feel that it is otherwise perfect.
Summary
The Tetra 10 isn’t a good choice for professional anglers or those who want to head out to deep water and battle giant game fish. However, it is a great choice for anglers who want an affordable craft that is well-suited for farm ponds and calm lakes. The Tetra 10 is about as stable as you’d expect a 10-foot-long, entry-level kayak to be, although it probably isn’t stable enough for most anglers to feel comfortable standing.
It provides plenty of storage space for day-long fishing trips, and the included Gunnel rails give you the chance to mount any electronics or rod holders you like on the craft. It is also lightweight, making it easy for a single person to load, carry and launch.
