Space is one of the most common things that anglers must sacrifice when choosing a kayak – after all, every additional inch of length or beam creates more weight for the angler to carry and influences the performance characteristics of the craft. And while most modern fishing kayaks try to provide a number of different storage compartments and a rod-holder or two, most anglers will still find it necessary to dial back the amount of equipment they bring along during fishing trips.
The Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game II seeks to give anglers the chance to bring all the gear they need, as well as enough space to battle and land big fish in open water. But unlike some other barge-like kayaks on the market that prioritize elbow room and storage space, the Prowler Big Game II still handles like a dream and cuts through the water with ease.
- Remarkable stability allows standing
- Three-position adjustable seat provides great comfort
- The Prowler Big Game II provides all the storage space you could want and more
- The Prowler Big Game II isn’t a super-maneuverable craft that will excel in crowded spots
- Relatively heavy
- No skid plate is included with the kayak
The Prowler Big Game II is a big, sturdy kayak. Measuring 12 feet and 9 inches long and boasting a 34-inch-wide beam, this kayak is quite buoyant and is capable of carrying 550 to 600 pounds of weight. This means that the craft will not only accommodate large anglers but all the gear you can think of and the 100-pound grouper you dragged up from the depths too.
The hull is sturdy and durable yet not excessively thick to ensure the weight (70 pounds) remains reasonable. It does not come with an included skid plate, but as it is primarily intended for use in open water, this isn’t a big problem.
The Prowler Big Game II provides anglers with all the storage space they could want. A generous compartment is located in the bow and features a Click Seal cover to keep your gear dry and secure. A cargo area is placed in the stern and provides more space than most other kayaks do for holding coolers, bait wells and other bulky items.
However, the most exciting storage space included with the Prowler Big Game II is easily the Mod Pod, which provides you with a place to mount a variety of aftermarket equipment, such as rod holders, fish finders, GPS units and more. Two flush-mount rod holders are pre-installed, and six accessory mounting plates give you even more places to mount additional rod holders or other equipment.
A battery bag is included to protect your power source, and a pair of paddle keepers help keep your paddles securely attached to the craft while leaving your hands free to fish.
The Prowler Big Game II provides a generous amount of cockpit space, to prevent your knees and elbows from bumping into the hull all day long. It also features the Element Seating System, to provide the ultimate in kayaking comfort. Comprised of a high-strength anodized aluminum frame and weather-resistant mesh panels, this seat can be moved between three different positions.
The seat can be lowered close to the surface to keep your center of gravity low while paddling, and it can also be raised to provide a better position for fishing. However, you can also flip the entire seat out of the way when it is time to stand up. The Prowler Big Game II also comes with the Glide Track Foot Brace System, to ensure that your legs and feet remain comfortable while paddling or fishing.
Thanks to its width and the robust construction of the kayak, the Prowler Big Game II is a remarkably stable craft. Beginning kayakers will appreciate the confidence that this kayak provides while you learn, and experienced anglers will appreciate that the craft is stable enough to permit standing. Some anglers even reported that they could turn around, lean over or reach out with their rod while standing, without causing the kayak to wobble at all.
The Prowler Big Game II is a big craft, so it isn’t the agilest or nimblest kayak on the water. It turns a bit awkwardly and is too large to negotiate cluttered areas along the shore, but it tracks well across open water – even without the optional rudder.
It isn’t the fastest boat on the water either, but this is an understandable tradeoff, given the space and stability it provides. The kayak is a bit heavy at 70 pounds, but it is still relatively easy to carry to and from the water thanks to the included handles.
If you want one of the most stable kayaks available, as well as one that provides an abundance of storage space, the Prowler Big Game II is hard to beat. It is perfectly suitable for most waters, including everything from farm ponds to off-shore reefs, and it is stable enough to accommodate standing anglers.
It is a bit big and bulky, so you’ll want to think about getting a hand-pulled trailer to help get it to the water, but you’ll appreciate the extra space it provides when you find yourself battling huge gamefish in the middle of open water.
