Aside from a few subjective preferences, there’s little mystery surrounding the features and characteristics anglers want in a fishing kayak. Most want a stable, comfortable vessel that handles well, tracks like it’s on a rail and provides plenty of storage space.
For anglers with sufficient budgetary flexibility, a propulsion system is obviously a welcome addition. But despite this straight-forward wish list, relatively few kayaks check off all of these boxes. Fortunately, Native Watercraft produces the Slayer Propel 13, which satisfies all of these desires and more.
Pros
- The included pedal drive system operates in forward and reverse
- Very stable craft that allows anglers to stand while fishing
- Fully adjustable, hand-sewn seat provides plenty of comfort
Cons
- Fully adjustable, hand-sewn seat provides plenty of comfort
- No skid plate included
- No thigh pads are included
Build Quality
Through our native slayer propel 13 review, we found it to be a very well-built craft. The hull is rigid, strong and durable, and features a low profile, modified tunnel design with a sharp bow angle to provide excellent tracking and help it cut through the wind with ease.
While the rudder is protected by the hull design, no skid plate is included, so you’ll need to use care in shallow water (of course, when the pedal drive system is installed, you’ll be unable to use the kayak in water that isn’t at least 12 to 18 inches deep). The kayak is available in four colors (Blue Lagoon, Copperhead, Hidden Oak and Lizard Lick) to match your personality and sense of style.
Storage Capacity
The Slayer Propel 13 provides ample storage space for all of your tackle, gear and equipment. A large, hard-shell hatch is located at the bow and a large cargo deck with bungee straps at the stern.
A 5-inch dry storage hatch is located behind the seat, while three flush mount rod holders are placed around the cockpit. Finally, two accessory rails are provided so that you can add fish finders, GPS units or additional rod holders.
Comfort
The Slayer Propel 13 boasts a very comfortable, hand-sewn seat, which is fully adjustable and can be slid forward or backward to provide a comfortable pedaling position.
The cockpit is roomy enough to accommodate most anglers, and the included deck padding provides a comfortable surface on which you can stand while fishing. It does not come with thigh pads, but this should not be a major problem for most anglers.
Stability
Like many other Native Watercraft kayaks, the Slayer Propel 13 is very stable. It handles rough and choppy water easily and provides enough stability to allow you to battle the biggest fish.
Most anglers will even feel comfortable sitting sideways or standing while piloting this craft. The kayak also boasts a 500-pound capacity, which means you’ll be able to bring along all of the gear and tackle you like.
Maneuverability
During the Native Slayer Propel 13 review, it proved to be a speedy kayak, which can reach top speeds of about 5.2 miles per hour (typical cruising speed is around 4.2 miles per hour). At 13 feet in length, the Slayer Propel isn’t especially agile, however, it tracks very well and comes with an included rudder (the rudder control is located on the left side of the kayak).
Additionally, the pedal drive system operates in both forward and reverse, which further improves its maneuverability. The Slayer Propel 13 isn’t the lightest kayak around; it weighs about 108 pounds when fully rigged, so you’ll need help carrying it to and from the water. However, it comes equipped with four carrying handles to make this as easy as possible.
Summary
The Slayer Propel 13 provides almost everything an angler could want in a fishing kayak. It is very well-built and features several hull design concepts that help provide fantastic performance on the water. It features ample, if not spectacular, amounts of storage space and the included accessory rails are very helpful. The cockpit is roomy, and the included seat back is quite comfortable, even during extended trips.
The vessel is stable enough for most anglers to feel comfortable standing and it can carry up to 500 pounds of rider and gear, so you won’t have to leave anything behind on the dock. The included pedal drive system and rudder make it very maneuverable, and although it is a relatively heavy vessel, the included carrying handles make it easy to haul around with a friend’s help.
