A lot of small kayaks are essentially designed to be cheap options for budget-limited anglers. However, some anglers want all of the performance and features you need in a high-quality fishing kayak, but in a small package.
Fortunately, there is at least one such option on the market: the Hobie Mirage Sport. Measuring only 9 feet and 7 inches long, the Mirage Sport is great for those with small cars, as well as those who fish small waters, and want the agility and maneuverability a small vessel provides.
- Despite being so small, the Mirage Sport comes with a ton of storage space
- The MirageDrive 180 pedal system allows you to fly around small waters with ease
- Quite stable for a small craft
- No thigh pads are included
- Many anglers will find the cockpit a bit tight
- No skid plate is included, which leaves the hull vulnerable to scrapes and dings
Like most other Hobie kayaks, the Mirage Sport is a well-built craft. This helps distinguish it from many of the other ultra-short kayaks on the market, which are typically made with poor materials and substandard craftsmanship.
The Mirage Sport is made from rotomolded polyethylene and is available in five different colors: Seagrass Green, Papaya Orange, Hibiscus Red, Ivory Dune and Slate Blue. Unfortunately, the Mirage Sport does not come with a skid plate to protect the hull.
The Mirage Sport may only be 9-feet-and-change, but it provides a surprising amount of storage space. A twist-seal hatch is included in the cockpit and serves as a great place for storing small tools and tackle, and a mesh pocket is situated on each side of the cockpit.
A large, bungee-equipped cargo area is provided at the stern, and a large compartment is placed in the bow for larger tools and equipment. Two flush-mount rod holders are included, and the Mirage Sport also comes equipped with a paddle keeper and a drink holder.
The Mirage Sport won’t accommodate very large anglers, but most small- to medium-sized paddlers will find that it provides adequate comfort. The cockpit isn’t especially long, so tall anglers may feel a bit cramped when piloting the craft.
Footwells are provided for those times when you’d rather paddle than peddle, and it comes with the Vantage CT seat, which is adjustable in four different ways and features a mesh back to keep your back cool during all-day fishing trips.
With a nearly 30-inch-long beam, the Mirage Sport is surprisingly stable. Some anglers may even find that it is stable enough to allow anglers to stand while fishing (although you’ll likely find it necessary to sit down when battling large fish). The craft only has a rated capacity of 225 pounds, so you’ll have to watch how much equipment you try to bring along, and it may not be able to support large anglers at all.
The Mirage Sport is a nimble craft, which is easy to pilot around even the most crowded waters. It isn’t the fastest kayak around, but it does come with the MirageDrive 180 pedal system, which will allow you to use your leg muscles to power the craft. It also tracks well, thanks to its tri-hull design and included twist-and-stow rudder.
Unfortunately, even though the Mirage Sport is a fairly small vessel, it weighs a lot for its size. Tipping the scales at 78 pounds (when fully rigged), the Mirage Sport isn’t easy for a single person to carry. That’s not to say it is impossible for a single angler to carry to and from the water, but it will not be easy for small, elderly or physically limited people to do so. Handles at the bow and stern are provided to make it easier to carry.
The Mirage Sport is a great option for anglers who want a small-water craft that performs like a premium kayak. It isn’t a good choice for tall or large anglers, but it is great for pint-sized paddlers and it will probably accommodate most anglers of average body size.
The included MirageDrive 180 pedal system makes getting around a breeze, and the craft is surprisingly stable for such a tiny vessel. If you are looking for a small and nimble, yet supremely capable craft, the Mirage Sport is difficult to beat.
