Anglers must often choose between speed and storage space when selecting a fishing kayak, but a few models – like the Hobie Mirage Revolution 11 — provide both in spades.
Equipped with the MirageDrive pedal system, this 11-foot-6-inch-long kayak flies across the water, while still allowing you to bring along a ton of equipment. It also handles very well and is nimble enough to pilot through congested waters and around shoreline obstacles.
- Very light for a pedal-powered kayak
- Comes with plenty of storage space for tools, tackle and larger items, such as coolers and live wells
- Included twist-and-stow rudder makes piloting the craft easy
- Does not come with a skid plate, so caution is needed in shallow water
- Not stable enough to permit standing
- Only includes two rod holders, which is disappointing for a kayak at this price range
The Mirage Revolution 11 features a unique teardrop-shaped design, which helps improve its performance. Made from rotomolded polyethylene, the Mirage Revolution 11 is a durable craft, which will surely last for years if cared for properly.
The Mirage Revolution 11 is available in five colors: Papaya Orange, Slate Blue, Ivory Dune, Seagrass Green and Hibiscus Red.
The Hobie Mirage Revolution 11 provides plenty of storage space, despite being a rather sleek and narrow craft. One twist-seal hatch is located in the cockpit, while a second twist-seal hatch is located in the stern.
A very large storage compartment is located in the bow, two mesh pockets are located in the cockpit, and a large, flat cargo area (complete with bungee cords for keeping your gear secure) is located behind the cockpit. Two flush-mount rod holders are situated behind the seat, and a paddle keeper is included to free up your hands.
Even though the Mirage Revolution 11 is built for speed and maneuverability, it still provides a fairly comfortable ride. The Revolution 11 doesn’t have an especially large cockpit, but average-sized anglers will likely find that it is roomy enough.
The included Vantage CT Seat features a mesh back to keep you cool during long fishing trips, and it can also be adjusted in four different ways to ensure that anglers of all shapes and sizes can attain a comfortable pedaling, paddling and fishing position. You can even raise the seat up 5 inches to enjoy a better view of the water.
The Mirage Revolution 11 is probably not stable enough for most anglers to feel confident standing, but it won’t constantly make you feel like you’re about to flip over while pedaling or paddling. Some anglers may feel confident enough to sit sideways and give their back and legs a break, but you’ll have to do so carefully to avoid taking a spill.
The craft is primarily designed for speed and maneuverability, so it isn’t the most buoyant kayak on the water, but it does boast a 275-pound capacity, which is enough to accommodate most average-sized anglers and plenty of equipment.
The Mirage Revolution 11 only weighs 81 pounds. This makes it a moderately heavy craft, but one of the lightest models available with the MirageDrive pedal system. Physically fit anglers can likely carry the craft by themselves, but many will require a partner to help carry it to and from the water. Fortunately, carrying handles are included at the bow, stern and cockpit to facilitate transportation on dry land.
On the water, the Mirage Revolution 11 handles like a dream. It reaches very impressive speeds when paddled, but its true capabilities only become obvious once the MirageDrive pedal system is engaged. Additionally, despite being more than 11 feet long, the Mirage Revolution 11 is fairly nimble, and – thanks to the included twist-and-stow rudder – is easy to pilot with precision.
Ignoring its performance, speed and maneuverability for a moment, the Mirage Revolution 11 is a very good craft for anglers. It provides a wealth of storage space and offers a very comfortable ride, and it is light enough that many anglers will probably be able to carry it by themselves. However, the Mirage Revolution 11 also handles well and rockets across the surface quickly and easily.
The included MirageDrive pedal system and twist-and-stow rudder make it easy to control and cover distance. If you are an angler seeking a high-performance kayak that will keep up with most high-end, recreational models, the Mirage Revolution 11 is a great option.
