At some point, many serious anglers want a top-of-the-line kayak, which provides every conceivable feature and capability along with premium performance. And while there are a handful of different models available for those who want such a craft, few are capable of contending with the Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 12.
Absolutely packed with features and characteristics anglers want, the Mirage Pro Angler 12 is simply one of the best kayaks around. This kind of quality isn’t cheap, so it isn’t a viable option for anglers with limited budgets, but those willing and able to spend top dollar for a top-notch kayak will almost certainly love the Pro Angler 12.
- Includes a twist-and-stow rudder and fold-up skeg for optimum performance
- Plenty of storage space is included
- The Vantage CT Seat is flexible and comfortable – even on long trips
- No skid plate is included
- Like most other Hobie kayaks, thigh pads are not mounted on the cockpit sides
- Very heavy craft, which will take two people to carry
The Mirage Pro Angler 12 is built like a tank, but it performs like a dream. Made from rotomolded polyethylene, the Mirage Pro Angler 12’s hull is rigid, strong and durable, so you know it’ll last for years.
It doesn’t feature a skid plate, which is slightly disappointing, but if you just exercise a little care when launching and landing, you’re unlikely to damage it significantly. The Mirage Pro Angler 12 is available in Camo, Papaya Orange and Ivory Dune.
The Mirage Pro Angler 12 provides as much storage space as just about any kayak on the water. A roomy and convenient storage compartment with two Plano tackle boxes is included in the cockpit, while a larger compartment is located at the bow. A large cargo deck is located at the stern, and it is equipped with bungee cords to keep your gear secure.
Additionally, a twist-seal storage hatch is located at the back of the cargo area, giving you yet another place to store equipment. Two mesh pockets are located in the cockpit, two flush-mount rod holders are placed behind the cockpit and a four-rod horizontal rod holder is included for anglers who like to take several rods out on the water.
You won’t enjoy any kayak if it doesn’t provide a comfortable ride, but thankfully, Hobie’s designers kept comfort at the forefront of their minds while engineering the Mirage Pro Angler 12. The cockpit is quite wide and long enough to provide the kind of legroom taller anglers need.
The Vantage CT Seat can be adjusted in four different ways to provide a comfortable position for paddling, pedaling or fishing, and it is made from mesh to keep your back cool. You can even raise the seat up 5 inches to give you a better view of the water and more comfortable position for fishing.
At 36 inches wide, the Mirage Pro Angler 12 is quite stable. It boasts a 500-pound capacity, so you can bring along all the gear you like (note that this is for the full craft — the Vantage CT Seat is only designed to accommodate 350 pounds).
It also means that large anglers will feel adequately supported while cruising around. The craft is not only stable enough for most anglers to stand comfortably, it features a special standing surface to provide additional grip and comfort.
The MirageDrive 180 pedal drive system makes the Mirage Pro Angler fast, nimble and easy to control. By using your leg muscles to drive the craft, you’ll be able to fish longer and travel further than kayaks that lack a high-quality propulsion system. The included twist-and-stow rudder allows you to make gentle course corrections or spin in a tight circle, and the included fold-up skeg helps the kayak track exceptionally well.
The Mirage Pro Angler 12 is a pretty heavy kayak and weighs 128 pounds when fully rigged, so you probably won’t be able to carry it by yourself. However, handles are included at the bow, stern and cockpit area, to make it easy to carry with help.
There aren’t many features or capabilities that the Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 12 fails to provide – it gives anglers almost everything they could possibly want. It is fast, stable and agile, and it provides more storage space than most anglers need.
It is ready to take on any aquatic situation you throw at it, from small farm ponds to the open ocean, and it handles like a dream, thanks to the pedal drive system, rudder and skeg that are included with the craft.
