If you primarily fish small waters, you don’t need a huge kayak, nor do you need the fastest kayak available. You won’t be traveling very far, and things like maneuverability are more important than speed. So, many anglers who stick to lakes, ponds and small rivers prefer relatively small kayaks, like the Moken 10 Standard.

Measuring 10 feet and 8 inches long, the Moken 10 Standard is ideally suited for the needs of small-water anglers, and it is easy to pilot around the overhanging trees, partially submerged stumps and other items that often confront such anglers. But while the Moken 10 Standard is a relatively small vessel, it still provides modern anglers with just about everything they expect in a fishing kayak.

Pros

  • Fantastic amount of storage space for the size of the craft
  • Very stable, despite being relatively small
  • Impressive capacity for a small craft

Cons

  • Relatively slow kayak that won’t cover water very quickly
  • Relatively slow kayak that won’t cover water very quickly
  • Only provides two rod holders and no rails are included for add-on accessories

Build Quality

Despite its very reasonable price point, the Moken 10 Standard is a strong and durable kayak, which is made from molded polyethylene. It is durable enough to last for years, and the hull is quite rigid.

No skid plate is included with the vessel, so you’ll want to exercise care while launching and landing the kayak, but it will take most scrapes and bumps in stride.

Storage Capacity

The Moken 10 Standard features a variety of different storage options. Four different storage compartments – including two side pockets on either side of the seat, a console and a rubber-topped compartment located directly in front of the seat – are included to provide convenient access to your tackle and tools.

Like many other FeelFree kayaks, the Moken 10 Standard features a flat cargo area and bungee-strap system to keep all of your items secure. Additionally, the bow of the Moken 10 Standard features another flat storage area, which includes a flexible mesh stretch cover to keep your equipment in place. Two flush-mount rod holders are also included, so you can bring along more than one rod.

Comfort

The Moken Standard is not a huge vessel, so very large or tall anglers may want to look for a different kayak. However, average-sized anglers will generally find that it provides sufficient space.

Four different foot wells are included on each side of the cockpit to allow you to adjust your leg position with ease, and the included King Fisher seat is well padded and fully adjustable. Additionally, most of the storage areas on the kayak are very easy to reach from a seated position.

Stability

Many anglers who tried out the Moken 10 Standard found that it offered a pretty stable ride. It is clearly unsuitable for choppy waters and rough seas, but it’ll provide plenty of stability for paddlers cruising around lakes and ponds.

It has a generous 35-inch-wide beam, but because there is not a great place to place your feet, it isn’t ideally suited for anglers who like to stand up while fishing. It is capable of supporting 440 pounds of angler and cargo, so you won’t have to spend hours trying to whittle down your fishing gear to remain under the rated capacity.

Maneuverability

The Moken 10 Standard is not terribly fast, but few crafts of this size are. It does, however, spin on a dime and allow you to pilot it through rather cluttered areas. It tracks reasonably well, thanks in part to the included keel, but it can be blown off course in strong winds. The Moken 10 Standard is also quite maneuverable on dry land too. It does weigh 64 pounds, so it isn’t terribly light for its size, but thanks to the molded handles and included Wheel in the Keel help offset these problems and make it easy to launch and land.

Summary

There are few better options for serious anglers who like to fish in small waters than the FeelFree Moken 10 Standard. It won’t help you cross the Atlantic or take on breaking waves, but it is well-suited for your local pond or river.

Despite being designed for relatively tame waters, this vessel comes with enough storage space to keep even the most gear-heavy anglers happy. It is adequately comfortable and stable, and it is nimble enough to navigate trees and other obstacles.
